With so many of us stuck at home, our homes have become more of a focal point. Home isn’t just home anymore it’s become the office, a conference room, the gym, and everything in between. People are looking around and they’re not happy with what they see. The most common question is “Where should I start?” Here are some things you should consider in the beginning:
1. Know Yourself. Make an observation of you, take notice of what YOU (and your partner or anyone else living with you) are drawn to. So many people design their homes for other people and take no thought about what they actually care about. What’s the point of that! Make a note of the things that catch YOUR eye. What things have you pinned on Pinterest? What stores do you like? What pictures have you kept? This is the starting point to begin figuring out how to decorate for YOU.
2. Know Your Style. So you’re obsessed with that carved chair or that ornate sideboard and you don’t know why? The details of the furniture, accessories, and art you love all have something in common and those are all hints to your style. Make a list, start a collage, look at everything together. Put a name to a face by finding out the name of your style; Is it art deco, Hollywood regency, farmhouse, mid-century modern, eclectic, contemporary?
Once you have the name of your style you can look at stores that fall under those categories. Personally, I have always been drawn to mid-century modern, art deco, modern, Hollywood regency, boho, and global so it’s safe to say my style is eclectic! It’s ok if your style has blurred lines, this is what makes every home unique like the people living in them.
3. Know Your Needs. How much money are you willing to spend? What’s the purpose of the space and how do you intend to use it? Decorating an office? You need a desk but think specifically for YOUR needs. Do you hate sitting for long periods of time? Then consider a standing desk. Decorating your bedroom? You need a bed but consider how you sleep and the size of your space. Maybe a daybed is better if you’re decorating a tiny space or need multi-functional pieces.
4. The Hunt Begins. You know your style, needs, and budget now you’re all set and ready for the hunt. This is the fun part and it takes time. Little by little, start adding pieces that correlate with your style. Garage & estate sales, vintage shops, chain stores, Facebook marketplace, consignment shops, and online stores are all perfect places to get started.
