Stepping inside of this tiny house in Upper Carlton St James, Barbados was new for me but a sea of memories for my father. First impressions…Let’s get out of here as fast as we can! But, to be fair it probably looked very different from what it looks like now. This type of house is known as a Chattel house which means “moveable”. When a homeowner was ready to leave they would just take their house down move to another plot of land and put it back up again. ….And here I was thinking that my rental situation in Brooklyn was complicated! My grandmother Sealy passed away decades ago she raised 2 boys here on her own and called it home. The Sealy house has a tiny living room and 2 even tinier bedrooms, 1 bathroom and a pretty open kitchen area. The shell is made of solid wood no drywall or insulation which is why it’s so easy to take apart. The ceilings in the bedrooms were so low I’m 5’4” and the ceilings had to be maybe…5’10”. Don’t mind me continue your conversation I’m just taking a few pictures… When I look at this house I see a dilapidated home however my father sees the place that shaped him. I still find it interesting that 2 people can look at an object and one see insignificance but to the other that same object retells a story transporting them to good or bad memories. Taking a pic of mommy dearest in the tiny “living room” area from the kitchen. It’s always a good day in Barbados to catch some waves!
